The Ark, The Church’s 2025 summer exhibition curated by Eric Fischl, refers directly to the myth of the Deluge: an event of such apocalyptic scale, forewarned, unheeded, and unstoppable, that it appeared it would be the end of all life on earth. However, through human resourcefulness, will, and compassion, the Great Flood marked a new beginning, a do-over… a rebirth. Composed solely of animal sculptures by over 40 international artists of the last century, the exhibition looks closely at man’s relationship with animals, nature, and self.  

The exhibition will feature robust and unique programming that has become a hallmark of our organization. As well, the show will extend to the outdoors, featuring several works throughout The Church’s garden. 

In tune with a thematic element of connection and the resourcefulness of working together, as well as The Church’s commitment to fostering creativity on the East End and celebrating Sag Harbor’s living legacy, The Ark will also include a collaboration with The Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum of a community-wide art project to decorate and enliven a large wooden ark, to be displayed on the front lawn of the Whaling Museum concurrently through the summer. The project will unite people of all ages through art, allowing people to creatively add to the ark with paint, sculpture, and other fun projects. 

Of particular note, the exhibition will be the first time that The Church will use its outdoor deck, adjacent to the mezzanine level – which will be the site for Louise Bourgeois’s Spider Couple, 2003, an iconic, 12-foot sculpture that marks the first time one of these celebrated works will be shown in at an arts institution on the East End. 

Finally, we are pleased to announce that the exhibition will be accompanied by a full-illustrated catalogue, featuring all of the works in the show as well as text contributions by many of the artists, designed and produced by Pointed Leaf Press.

Après avoir suscité l’enthousiasme des critiques et du public lors de nombreuses expositions en France et à travers le monde, l’artiste Patrick Villas, figure incontournable de la sculpture animalière contemporaine, ouvre les portes de son jardin de sculptures au public pour la septième fois.

Niché aux confins paisibles de la Haute-Marne, entre les localités de Neufchâteau et Vittel, Patrick Villas accueille les visiteurs dans un cadre enchanteur : son jardin, qui s’ouvre sur une vallée pittoresque, est le théâtre de la présentation d’une vingtaine d’œuvres monumentales et semi-monumentales, représentant tantôt des animaux, tantôt des figures humaines, façonnées avec talent dans des matériaux tels que la céramique et le bronze. En plus de contempler ces créations, les visiteurs sont invités à découvrir l’atelier même où naissent ces œuvres d’art et où sont exposées cette année les dessins et tableaux de l’artiste.

• Né en 1961, Patrick Villas jouit d’une reconnaissance internationale, ayant été sollicité pour des commandes publiques par des institutions prestigieuses telles que le Musée de Zoologie d’Anvers en Belgique, le Fonds Départemental de l’Art Contemporain de l’Orne en France, le village de Robécourt dans les Vosges, ainsi que par la Matmut.

En 2023, une exposition rétrospective et un parcours de sculptures monumentales ont été présentés au Musée Pompon à Saulieu, attirant l’attention des amateurs d’art du monde entier. Cet été, Patrick Villas est également invité à participer à l’exposition prestigieuse “The Ark” organisée par Eric Fischl dans le Centre d’Art Contemporain The Church à Sag Harbor (New York), où ses œuvres sont exposées à côté des œuvres d’artistes de renommée Internationale comme Louise Bourgeois, Rembrandt Bugatti, Maurizio Cattelan, Jim Dine, Daniel Firman, Nicola Hicks, Jörd Immendorf, William Kentridge et Kate MccGwire.

Depuis 1997, les créations de Patrick Villas ont conquis les galeries et les salons d’art les plus prestigieux à travers le monde, de Tefaf à Masterpiece. En reconnaissance de son talent exceptionnel, il a été honoré du Prix E. Jonchère par la Fondation Taylor en 2014, tandis que Daum France a immortalisé deux de ses œuvres en cristal. En 2019, Patrick Villas a également été nommé “Ambassadeur de la Haute-Marne”.

After generating enthusiasm among critics and the public at numerous exhibitions in France and around the world, artist Patrick Villas—an essential figure in contemporary animal sculpture—opens the gates of his sculpture garden to the public for the seventh time.

Nestled in the peaceful reaches of Haute-Marne, between the towns of Neufchâteau and Vittel, Patrick Villas welcomes visitors into an enchanting setting: his garden, which opens onto a picturesque valley, serves as the stage for the presentation of around twenty monumental and semi-monumental works. These pieces, depicting both animals and human figures, are skillfully crafted in materials such as ceramic and bronze. In addition to admiring these creations, visitors are invited to discover the very studio where these artworks are brought to life, and where this year the artist’s drawings and paintings are also on display.

Born in 1961, Patrick Villas enjoys international recognition, having received public commissions from prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Zoology in Antwerp (Belgium), the Departmental Fund for Contemporary Art of Orne (France), the village of Robécourt in the Vosges, as well as from the French insurance group Matmut.

Highlights of his artistic career include exhibitions at the Orangerie of the French Senate, the Matmut Foundation for Art, and in the cities of Compiègne, Bagnoles de l’Orne, Neufchâteau, and Megève. In 2023, a retrospective exhibition and a monumental sculpture trail were presented at the Pompon Museum in Saulieu, drawing the attention of art lovers from around the world. This summer, Patrick Villas is also invited to take part in the prestigious exhibition “The Ark”, curated by Eric Fischl at The Church, a contemporary art center in Sag Harbor (New York), where his works will be shown alongside those of internationally renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Rembrandt Bugatti, Maurizio Cattelan, Jim Dine, Daniel Firman, Nicola Hicks, Jörg Immendorff, William Kentridge, and Kate MccGwire.

Since 1997, Patrick Villas’ creations have captivated prestigious galleries and art fairs worldwide, from TEFAF to Masterpiece. In recognition of his exceptional talent, he was awarded the E. Jonchère Prize by the Taylor Foundation in 2014, and two of his works were immortalized in crystal by Daum France. In 2019, Patrick Villas was also named “Ambassador of Haute-Marne.”

Le Musée Pompon nous invite à découvrir ou redécouvrir le travail du sculpteur du 22 mai au 31 décembre 2023 à l’occasion d’une exposition exceptionnelle. Elle se présente en deux parties : un parcours à pied à travers Saulieu, au départ de la Rue d’Argentine, devant l’Office de Tourisme Morvan Saulieu, jusque devant la Mairie (Place de la République).

Les sculptures monumentales de l’artiste vous guideront, comme des étapes sur votre cheminement, pour vous conduire jusqu’au Musée Pompon. À votre arrivée, à partir du 13 septembre 2023, vous assisterez à la suite de l’exposition avec des sculptures mais aussi des peintures, des dessins, des diasecs ou encore des maquettes de l’artiste.

Walk of (semi) monumental sculptures in Saulieu for the Musée Pompon

From Monday, May 22 2023, the village of Saulieu welcomes (semi) monumental sculptures by Patrick Villas.

The Pompon Museum invites us to discover or rediscover the work of the sculptor from May 22 to December 31 2023 during this exceptional exhibition. It is presented in two parts: a walk of monumental sculptures through Saulieu, starting from Rue d’Argentine, in front of the Morvan Saulieu Tourist Office, on to the Town Hall (Place de la République).
The monumental pieces of the artist will guide you to the Pompon Museum. Upon your arrival, starting from September 13 2023, you can attend the rest of the exhibition inside the Museum itself, with smaller sculptures but also paintings, drawings, diasecs or even originals by the artist.
